The Great Way of Huaxia: Though Zhou Is an Ancient State, Its Mandate Is Ever New

This book aims to pierce the mists of five thousand years of history and build a new theoretical framework for understanding Chinese civilization. Amid today's renewed enthusiasm for traditional culture, we pose a central question: Is this merely a return to the classics, or the true awakening of the Chinese civilizational system?

The author establishes the "Hengbo Framework," built around the sixteen-character principle: "Legalism governs, the Hundred Schools remain outside government, serve the people, and champion endeavor." It reveals the deeper secret behind the enduring vitality of Chinese civilization. The framework holds that a healthy civilization needs a firm foundation of rule of law (Legalism governs), while also making room for the flexible oversight of diverse cultural thought (the Hundred Schools remain outside government). Together, these two forces ensure that institutions always serve the broadest public (serve the people) and continually encourage endeavor while curbing complacency (champion endeavor).

The book systematically traces this framework's evolution and validation throughout history, from the first systematic synthesis in King Wen of Zhou's Book of Changes, through the pre-Qin exploration of Confucian-Legalist complementarity, to Wang Yangming's breakthrough in the Study of the Mind, and finally to modern China's practice of "governing the country according to law" and "letting a hundred flowers bloom." It innovatively argues that civilization's lasting vitality lies in incorporating the cultural oversight of those outside government into the design of governing institutions, achieving a leap from external criticism to internal checks and balances, and thereby building an ideal of dynamic governance in which "flowing water never grows stale, and a door hinge never grows worm-eaten."

Amid the global shift of "the East rising and the West declining," this book argues that the framework is not only key to China's cultural rejuvenation, but could also offer new wisdom on governance to human civilization. This is an act of civilizational self-discovery, as well as a call to action for the future.
