A Han Dynasty Tycoon: From Free Merchant to Aristocratic Estate

In On the Principles of Order and Disorder, Zhong Changtong made a prophecy of the world's end: “The mansions of the wealthy stretch for hundreds of connected buildings. Fertile fields fill the countryside, with a thousand groups of servants and ten thousand dependents.” In just a few words, he precisely sketched the ultimate outcome of the distorted development of wealth over the Han dynasty's four hundred years.

From the iron merchants of Linqiong freely competing in the market to the eunuchs of Luoyang wielding power and amassing riches; from the unchecked expansion of aristocratic estates to military factions turning power into profit, none of the Han dynasty's carefully established and continually refined fiscal policies could stop the transformation of wealth: the unified currency system, state monopolies on salt and iron, the tax on accumulated wealth and the practice of reporting tax evaders, and the state-regulated market system. In the end, the Han dynasty was driven into an either-or binary, moving from state monopolies to complete private control by the powerful. The wealthy of the Han gradually militarized their fortunes, transforming into the warlords of the Three Kingdoms.

In the early Han, merchants built their businesses independently through their own abilities. In the Eastern Han, scholars and merchants joined forces. By the late Han, soldiers and merchants had merged. These successive changes charted the evolution of wealthy families' power in the Han dynasty.

A country without the wealthy is pitiable, for it lacks a source of innovation and the vitality to develop. Yet a country overrun by powerful magnates is just as pitiable, for that is often the prelude to its demise.

This novel takes a distinctive approach, using the style of a wuxia tale to focus on a single dynasty. It guides readers through the legendary paths to riches taken by the wealthy of the Han and the vicissitudes of the Han Empire. It also explores in depth how the fortunes of the Han elite changed across industry, trade, and finance. Through a story full of twists and turns, readers can appreciate the close ties, mutual influence, and dialectical unity between the destinies of the wealthy and that of the empire.
