Qingfeng Village lies deep in the Kunlun foothills, surrounded by mountains and cut off from the world, a forgotten corner of the land. There is none of the bustle of the city, but an oppressive gloom that never lifts: bones lie exposed in the mass graves behind the village, where resentment gathers and lingers; outside the village, the ancient trees of Blackwind Forest tower into the sky, blocking out the sun year-round and hiding the legend of the "soul-devouring mountain demon"; Black Dragon Pool at the village entrance is bottomless, and the wronged spirits of those who drowned there weep night after night; even the ancestral tablets in the clan shrine are shrouded in lingering baleful energy.
The protagonist, Lin Feng, was born into this eerie land. On the day of his birth, blood rain fell from the sky as thunder and lightning roared. The century-old locust tree at the village entrance withered overnight, every chicken and livestock in the village died, and the midwife dropped dead on the spot. Born with an overwhelming aura of ill fortune, his fate was judged by a master of physiognomy to be that of a "calamity-starred loner." He would have to survive eighteen trials of life and death, each one threatening to claim his life: at best, he would be left crippled, his meridians severed; at worst, his soul would be scattered. His baleful aura would also turn against his loved ones, bringing death to those around him. He was the "ill-omened star" everyone in Qingfeng Village went out of their way to avoid.
From childhood, Lin Feng lived amid the villagers' scorn and ostracism. Children threw stones at him and hurled insults, while adults avoided him as if he were a snake or scorpion. His father vanished mysteriously while hunting in the mountains. Unable to bear the rumors and the grief of losing her husband, his mother threw herself into Black Dragon Pool. Only his elderly grandfather, Lin Zhengxiong, defied the entire village and protected him with his life, doing everything he could to raise him. As Lin Feng's eighteenth birthday drew near, the baleful energy within him grew increasingly restless, and the eighteen trials foretold by the master of physiognomy finally began.
Every trial was closely tied to the secrets Qingfeng Village had buried for a thousand years, the sins passed down by its ancestors, and the lurking demons and ghosts: villagers who vanished, livestock that died horribly, eerie sobbing echoing in the dead of night,
