Synopsis

In the vast north stands an old town forgotten by time and snow: Qishan Town. At its eastern end is a shop older than the town itself. It has no sign, but everyone knows its address: 444. It is a coffin shop.

The Lin family coffin shop has been passed down for 347 years. Its keeper has always been the sole heir of each generation, and every one has obeyed a strict rule: close the doors at sunset; if someone knocks at midnight, do not answer if they are alive. They say answering will awaken things that should not exist.

Lin Jiu is the current keeper. His parents disappeared when he was young, leaving him to depend on his grandfather. He thought he would live out his days like his ancestors, tending the eerie shop and its coffins. Then, on a winter night when his grandfather suddenly fell gravely ill, he broke the family rule and answered the “knocking” that should never have been answered… By the next morning, all seven people in town had died mysteriously, their bodies facing the shop and kneeling as if begging forgiveness.

Before his grandfather died, he pressed an old book with blank pages into Lin Jiu’s hands. Seven days later, crimson words appeared on its pages: “You are the 444th keeper. You have awakened them.”

At the same time, thick, foul-smelling blood began to seep from the black coffin in the shop, which had never been opened and was said to hold the remains of the Lin family’s ancestor…

Is the blank book a key, or a curse? Who lies buried in the black coffin: an ancestor, or the source of the horror? And what are the “things” that have been awakened? Forced onto a bizarre path to uncover the truth about his family and avert a catastrophe, Lin Jiu discovers that the watch maintained for more than three hundred years is itself a vast prison and conspiracy.

Looking for Completed Novels About Land Gods, Mountain Gods, City Gods, and the Like

I've been reading for so many years that I've lost count of how many books I've read. It's been a long time since I found a book that got me excited. I'm getting pickier and pickier. With most books, I can guess the ending after reading the beginning. I don't know why books these days all feel so formulaic.
