War of Resistance: Who Had Him Dismissed? Have You Got a Death Wish?

A desperate joke circulated through the Japanese military headquarters:

“Let’s hope Han Sang gets promoted soon and becomes a big shot in the central government. Then he’ll stop making life miserable for us out here.”

Han Feng looked at the starving, emaciated soldiers in his arms and the weeping civilians amid the flames behind him. Then he tore up his transfer order.

“I’m done climbing the ranks.”

“I’ll lead these troops myself.”

“I’ll defend this territory myself!”

From five hundred battered survivors to an army of a hundred thousand,

from a pawn to a player beyond the board.

When the Blue Sky with a White Sun flag was raised, he had only one thing to say to his soldiers and the million civilians under his protection:

“From this day on, we trust only the guns in our hands and the brothers at our side, the ones who live and die with us.”

“As for which road we take...”

“I’ll lead you all and carve us a path through blood.”
