Bright Sword: Yun Fei Crosses the River

“Shanxi cuisine is too rustic to serve at a proper table.”

In 1938, Guo Jun gentleman Chu Yunfei said those words to Eighth Route Army regimental commander Li Yunlong over a table full of local dishes. They would haunt him for the rest of his life.

He never expected to transmigrate from a twenty-first-century food scholar into the very man who had said them. Nor did he expect that, amid the chaos of war, it would not be the food that failed to measure up, but the fragility of civilization beneath the enemy’s iron heels.

So the most “refined” Nationalist army commander began secretly doing the most “common” things:

When the Japanese launched a campaign of “culinary assimilation,” he secretly rebuilt the old vinegar workshops.

His wife, Fang Mengying, was an underground Party member, and he quietly helped protect the routes used to move cultural relics.

He even teamed up with his “old rival,” Li Yunlong, to wage one tongue-tingling ambush after another with vinegar-jar land mines and spoiled military rations.

From the Taihang Mountains to Kinmen Island, from the streets of Taiwan to San Francisco’s Chinatown, he guarded a few jars of vinegar starter and somehow brought “unrefined” Shanxi flavors to tables around the world.

But when he finally returned with an international restaurant empire, he found his old friends scattered and his homeland transformed.

Li Yunlong asked, “Brother Chu, what was it all for?”

Chu Yunfei gazed at the crowds winding through the museum and smiled faintly.

“Brother Yunlong, look.”

“Shanxi cuisine has earned its place at the table of Chinese civilization for the ages.”

**An epic about dignity: A gentleman may fail to save his homeland, but he must preserve the spark of civilization.**
