Weaving Dreams in Jiangnan: The Merchant's Soul in a Time of Turmoil

In the turbulent Republican era, warlords carve up the land, foreign goods flood the market, and the silk industry of Jiangnan teeters on the brink. Zhang Li, daughter of a Suzhou silk merchant, grew up inspired by her father's belief that industry could save the nation. But her family falls into decline: her father's silk mill is driven into bankruptcy by the malicious tactics of Hengchang Trading Company, backed by Japanese capital, and he dies with bitter resentment. At eighteen, Zhang Li is thrust into the breach, taking on the burden of restoring the family business and protecting Chinese-made goods. She starts with a small venture embroidering handkerchiefs for wealthy households and gradually rebuilds Zhenxin Silk Mill.

Her path as an entrepreneur is strewn with obstacles. Liu Jingtang, a comprador for Hengchang Trading Company, monopolizes raw silkworm cocoons and repeatedly swoops in to snatch up the supply. Zhao Hu, commander of the local security corps, imposes exorbitant taxes and strong-arms her into submitting to his power. Zhou Qiyuan, a crooked competitor, steals her designs and churns out cheap imitations, triggering a vicious price war. In desperate circumstances, Zhang Li draws on her unyielding spirit to stand up to foreign oppression and unite small and midsize merchants so they can support one another. She disguises herself to secretly learn advanced loom techniques and braves the turmoil to travel deep into Huzhou to buy cocoons. To keep the mill afloat, she even loses sight of her original ideals for a time and relies on Zhao Hu's security corps, leading to shoddy production and discontent among the workers.

The arrival of Chen Yong, an impoverished patriotic scholar, helps Zhang Li keep her head in the chaos. Chen Yong understands foreign languages and current affairs, and sees through the rules of a turbulent world. He turns down the high salary dangled by a foreign trading company and chooses to use his knowledge to help Zhang Li: translating overseas textile research to improve production, connecting her with the overseas Chinese merchant Chen Nanyang to open up export markets, and speaking plainly to dissuade her when she relies on powerful forces, even at the cost of a falling-out. Zhang Li's close friend Su Min never abandons her. She helps manage the mill's internal affairs while fighting for the workers' rights.
