Huang Chao: Golden Armor Covers the City

When autumn comes, on the eighth day of the ninth month, my blossoms bloom and all other flowers die. My fragrance surges skyward, filling Chang'an; the whole city is clad in golden armor.

This story exposes the rotten nature of the aristocratic clans: how they monopolized power, seized wealth, and suppressed the common people. It shows how the clan system eroded the foundations of the late and mid-Tang dynasty and devastated the people's livelihoods. It culminates in Huang Chao's uprising, the capture of Chang'an, and the reckoning with the nobles and aristocratic clans, illustrating the historical inevitability of the saying: “As long as the aristocratic clans endure, the age of chaos will never end.”
