A modern office drone dies suddenly after staying up all night revising a proposal, then opens his eyes in the body of Zhu Yousong, the Hongguang Emperor of the Southern Ming. He has barely adjusted to being an emperor with a harem of beautiful women when a eunuch rushes in with urgent news: “The Qing army is only thirty li from Nanjing!” To save his own skin, he is forced into a mode of “acting like a debauched, useless wastrel in public while making extreme moves in secret.” He must seem just as addicted to wine and women as the original Zhu Yousong, while secretly building alliances, fortifying the city, and finding a way out, surviving by the narrowest of margins amid absurdity and crisis.
