When Disappointment Finally Piles Up

When we were dating, he said he would love me for the rest of his life. After we married, I learned how long a lifetime could be.

On our third wedding anniversary, the cake I’d made myself went moldy in the trash, just like my marriage.

From that day on, I became Sherlock Holmes and the best actress around. From lipstick on his collar to the obscene “parallel world” on his phone, and then the hotel video my best friend sent me, I used the dullest knife to slowly carve up my already shattered heart.

Just when I thought I’d hit rock bottom, fate laughed and told me things could get worse.

When morning sickness left me weak and drained, his phone was always busy;

The bill splitting for my prenatal checkups looked painfully stark beside the records of him spending lavishly on his mistress;

On her drawing, my daughter used a blue crayon to depict “Mommy crying”;

And the first time he hit me, his slap landed on the arm I’d raised to shield my face. That dull thud shattered the last of my illusions.

My mother-in-law said, “All men are like this. For the child’s sake, just put up with it.”

Everyone urged me, “What worth does a divorced woman with a child have?”

Until I understood:

A woman’s worth has never depended on whose wife or mother she is. It lies in who she is herself.

I traded my dresses for work clothes and my tears for armor.

I returned to the workplace, going from timid and uncertain to standing on my own;

The salary I earned was a long-lost sense of dignity;

My daughter’s childish voice saying, “Go, Mommy!” became my unbreakable source of strength.

When I flung the divorce papers and irrefutable evidence that would leave him with nothing in front of him,

the man who had once made me suffer so terribly finally fell to his knees.
