The Cage and the Road Home: Fireworks in Another World

I’m thirty, with no house, no car, no partner, just an ordinary shut-in.

Then, on my birthday, I missed a step and fell straight into an ancient imperial palace, landing right in front of an emperor who kills without batting an eye.

Other people transmigrate as rich young ladies. I started out as a “witch” and nearly got my head chopped off.

To stay alive, I had to work like a beast in the palace, scrubbing clothes until the skin came off my hands.

The emperor had a foul temper and was wildly suspicious. He thought nobody was trustworthy.

For some reason, he took an interest in me and transferred me to his side to serve him tea and water.

When he was pleased, he rewarded me with gold and silver. When he wasn’t, he shouted at me and sometimes locked me in a dark room.

I was scared of him and couldn’t get away. Whenever he was kind to me, my heart still raced with nerves.

After a while, I figured out that, in his eyes, I was just a little bird he kept. He’d amuse himself with me when he was happy and toss me aside when he wasn’t.

Later, for the sake of his empire, he pushed me forward to take the blame without even blinking. My heart went completely cold.

That’s it. I’m done serving people!

I found a chance to fake my death and run away. I fled to a small town in Jiangnan, hid my identity, and made a living with my embroidery.

Later, I married an honest, simple man. We were poor, but I felt at peace.

I heard that the emperor eventually became a wise ruler and united the land, but never took an empress.

Who knows? It has nothing to do with me anymore.

He can sit on his throne, and I’ll live my little life. We owe each other nothing. May we each find our own peace.
