A Mountain Girl’s Road to a Comeback

“You’re just an unwanted bastard!” Chen Nianxi has heard those words for twenty-four years. Her childhood was filled with rats in the woodshed, icy water in winter, and endless beatings and scoldings. Her adolescence brought the bitterness of laboring for a living, the struggle to get an education, and exploitation by relatives. As a young adult, she faced cutthroat workplace politics, family burdens, and society’s prejudice. But even the darkest night cannot keep out a glimmer of light. She slept in a doghouse, crawled through a dog hole, and ate Guanyin clay, yet she never gave up on her dream of studying. Every fall became a stepping stone that helped her climb higher; every hurt became armor that helped her grow. She was no born phoenix, but a weed tempered by hardship and reborn, using her resilience and defiance to write a legendary story of rising from the dust and blossoming.
