Synopsis

Poetry as a bridge, tracing the aesthetics and history of Chinese tradition In The Poetic Realm Revisited: Aesthetic Variations Along the River of Chinese Tradition, poetry serves as a vessel for unlocking the many facets of China's cultural legacy. Distinctive aesthetics sketch the stories of each age, allowing historical change to settle into vivid cultural memories between the lines. The poems break free from linear storytelling, giving each dynasty its own unique aesthetic foundation: the pre-Qin era captures the grace of “Feng and Ya,” with white dew among the reeds concealing the beginnings of ritual and music, and oracle bones and bronze vessels inscribed with the joys and sorrows of the ancients; the Wei and Jin dynasties forge a spirit of “character and integrity,” as wine cups and flowing streams reflect the free-spiritedness of famed scholars, while fading notes of the qin tell of those who held fast amid troubled times; the flourishing Tang spreads a radiant “rainbow robe,” Chang'an's profusion of blossoms setting off the bold spirit of its poets, while fierce frontier winds bear witness to the loyal souls of its soldiers; the Song Dynasty is suffused with the fragrance of “books and scrolls,” as the mighty river flowing east gives voice to patriotic ambition and the cool, sorrowful lyrics of Shuyu capture love and longing; the Ming and Qing dynasties paint an “ink-wash landscape,” with volumes of classics distilling the finest scholarship and raging flames of war revealing the steadfast spirit of the nation. The whole poem takes seven-character verse as its framework and aesthetic imagery as its wings, deeply intertwining the spirit of Chinese tradition with the course of history. From the simplicity of the pre-Qin era to the depth of the Ming and Qing, from the integrity of scholars to the backbone of the nation, every passage marks an aesthetic leap, and every story carries a cultural legacy. As readers journey through these verses, they can savor the aesthetic splendor of different eras and feel the enduring vitality of Chinese cultural traditions through changing times, discovering the unique power of poetry to pass civilization down through the ages.
