The Realm of Power: Thirty-Six Stratagems

Lin Yuantu is a warehouse administrator at the Chongming salt works during the Jiajing era of the Ming dynasty, just waiting to die.

Faced with a deadly predicament involving Japanese pirate blades, a corrupt superior, and colleagues plotting against him, a copy of The Thirty-Six Stratagems opens with a thunderclap in his mind.

[Crossing the Sea Under False Colors]: He alters the ledgers, turns a deficit into an achievement, and wins the favor of an imperial censor.

[Killing with a Borrowed Knife]: With a clever scheme, he eliminates a tyrant, takes over three thousand mu of fertile land, and earns his first fortune.

[Secretly Crossing at Chencang]: Using the campaign against the Japanese pirates as cover, he raises a private army and becomes the “King of Hell Lin,” a man no one in Songjiang Prefecture dares to provoke.

Yan Song, Xu Jie, Zhang Juzheng… He maneuvers among the great powers, choosing sides each time with perfect timing.

From the Lianghuai salt works to the southeastern maritime customs, from the Nanjing Ministry of Works to the Zhejiang front lines against the Japanese pirates.

On the surface, he is a capable financial minister to the Wanli Emperor. In secret, he is the uncrowned king who controls half the empire’s maritime trade.

When the executioner’s blade of reckoning finally falls, Lin Yuantu, locked in the imperial prison, looks at the words “The Wolf Turns Back” on the wall and smiles.

“The rules of the Ming bureaucracy were written by me.”
