The Pen That Couldn't Hear Through Its Left Ear

The Pen That Couldn’t Hear with Its Left Ear Li Ziqiang, deaf in his left ear, spends his whole life struggling on the boundary between being seen and being ignored. Abandoned by his birth family as a child, he scavenges cold steamed buns at a construction site as a teenager, then curls up beneath a bridge and coughs blood as he writes in his youth. His world is always shadowed by silent gloom, yet he refuses to let go of his pencil. Chen Man’s warm steamed buns and the title page of Les Misérables are the only light in the cold night. Xiao Ya’s brief encouragement and Lin Xiu’s recognition help him preserve the purity of his writing even when he is exploited and smeared, driven to desperation. He inscribes the suffering of the poor, the kindness of strangers, and his hard-won acceptance of family onto the page. From The Abandoned Left Ear to Light in the Basement, every stroke is stained with blood and tears, yet it also holds a hope that refuses to go out. Later, he creates a charitable writing corner in his rented apartment, where migrant workers, seniors living alone, and people with disabilities can write down what they feel. This “deaf” pen not only saves him, but becomes countless pinpricks of light that gather in the corners of the city to form a warm ocean. This is no feel-good comeback story, but the true epic of an ordinary man from the bottom of society. He cannot hear the world’s noise with his left ear, yet through his writing, he lets the whole world hear that ordinary lives, painful pasts, and steadfast kindness all deserve to be remembered.
