Cold Case Files: A True Account of a Murder That Spanned Thirty Years

The Case Files: A Murder Spanning Thirty Years begins with the long-buried “Brick Kiln Woman's Corpse Case.” On the verge of retirement, veteran detective Li Jianguo reopens the cold case in the archives to fulfill his mentor's dying wish, only to discover an intentionally concealed truth behind it. The bloody character “debt” carved into the victim Zhou Hui's chest, a hexagonal nut left at the scene, and a mysterious symbol in the night watchman's notebook... Every clue points to secrets buried by time.

As the investigation deepens, Li Jianguo discovers countless connections between the case and the victim's younger brother, Zhou Wei, the witnesses from that time, and other unknown figures. Behind the supposed “debt” lie family grudges, tangled interests, and the depths of human nature, all spanning thirty years. When a new murder occurs in a similar manner, Li Jianguo realizes this is no simple act of revenge, but a “cipher game” passed down through three generations. Every symbol, every wound, every seemingly irrelevant testimony is a code left behind by the killer, waiting to be deciphered.

Told in a documentary style, the novel weaves together a detective's determination, the victims' struggles, and the killer's obsession amid the relentless flow of time. The investigation not only uncovers the truth behind the murders, but also lays bare the light and darkness of human nature amid changing times, exploring profound questions of crime and punishment, memory and forgetting, and repayment and redemption. Thirty years have left the evidence covered in dust, yet as each layer is peeled away, the truth grows ever clearer. Some debts can only be repaid over a lifetime; some codes will ultimately be unlocked in the pursuit of justice.
