Traces Beneath the Earth

Beneath the Luoyang Shovel is set against the underground current of tomb raiding in northern China during the 1980s and 1990s, offering a realistic look at the lives of the so-called tomb diggers. Lao He has made a living robbing tombs for thirty years. His skill at reading soil with a single shovel and judging a tomb’s depth with three probes has earned him a place in the trade. Alongside his apprentice, Xiao Ma, he roams the wilderness and lonely graves, scraping by on the sale of small funerary artifacts.

There are no legends in this line of work. Scouting a site means poring over old county records and studying the lay of the land; digging means steering clear of quicksand and layers of piled stone. When opening a coffin, you first guard against corpse poison, then determine the age of the objects inside. The so-called rules are merely a form of self-restraint born of fear of retribution: don’t disturb recent graves, and don’t take burial offerings. But they can’t stop rival crews from fighting over territory, or keep you out of the searchlights of patrol teams sweeping the hills.

Ten years ago, during a raid on a Warring States tomb, his accomplices turned on one another over a gilt bronze ding. Lao He escaped with half a broken handle, and the incident became a wound he couldn’t bear to touch. Now, an overseas buyer has set his sights on a local noble’s tomb, offering a fortune. Lao He knows it’s a one-way trip, yet he can’t resist the temptation. Once the team enters the tomb, the traps are the least of their worries. The schemes of the people around them are deadlier: the rookies’ greed causes trouble, the veterans each have their own agenda, and even Xiao Ma is hiding something.

When the Luoyang shovel pierces the loess again, it brings up more than pottery shards and bronze rust. It disturbs a thousand years of silence and lays bare the struggle of ordinary people caught between poverty and desire. The moment the tomb door opens, what is revealed is never just treasure, but the rawest depths of human nature.
