My Two Dads

My name is Gao Lele. I have a secret: my Omega dad, Gao Tu, is a “liar.”

He always says he’s an ordinary Beta, but I know he stares at an old phone late at night and holds me extra tight during thunderstorms. He smells like lovely sage, but he lies and tells me it’s energizing essential oil for Betas.

Then one day, a tall, cold Alpha uncle, as imposing as an iceberg, found us. The way he looked at Dad Gao Tu was like a wolf staring at a rabbit that had been lost for a long time.

Dad Gao Tu told me to call him “Uncle Shen.”

That uncle, Shen Wenlang, had such big hands. When he gently touched my face, they trembled a little. He looked at me, then at Dad Gao Tu, his eyes shining with a sadness and brightness I’d never seen before.

Later, Dad Shen carried me on his shoulders so I could touch the clouds in the sky. Dad Gao Tu finally stopped sighing in secret at night, and his smile was sweeter than strawberry pancakes.

Now I understand. Dad Gao Tu told so many lies because he was too afraid of losing someone. And Dad Shen searched for so long because he was too afraid he’d never find him.

Our family is like a beautiful cup that was accidentally broken. Now, love and courage are putting it back together, piece by piece.
