Reborn in the Xing'an Mountains: A Hunter's Eight Lovely Daughters

On the Mid-Autumn Festival in 2025, deep in the forest region of the Greater Khingan Range, Zhang Xiangkun, a lonely forest ranger in his seventies, drank himself to death in a fit of remorse. He had spent his life favoring sons over daughters, neglecting his wife and daughters in his pursuit of a son, until everyone turned against him. One moment he woke from a dream, and he was back in 1984. His wife had just given birth to their eighth daughter, and his mother and second older brother were pressuring him to adopt his nephew.

Faced with his despairing wife and eight daughters, all thin and sallow, Zhang Xiangkun came to his senses. With a woodcutter’s knife he hunted ducks, with a slingshot he took down rats, and with snares he caught deer... Drawing on the hunting skills he had accumulated in his previous life, he fed his family in this golden age when guns and hunting were not prohibited, carving a living out of the wilderness.

He stood up to his biased parents and beat his parasitic older brother and sister-in-law, winning his daughters the chance to go to school and slowly thawing his wife’s frozen heart. Slingshot, snares, woodcutter’s knife... In time, they would give way to the rifle that would strike fear throughout the mountains. Wild boars, black bears, sable... The treasures of the deep mountains came with danger.

This is the redemptive legend of a no-good man, the rise of a Northeastern hunter, and above all, the glorious life a father carved out for his eight daughters with a woodcutter’s knife and a hunting rifle!
