The Loving Hunter and His Six Fairy Daughters

On the Start of Winter in 2025, deep in the Xing'an Mountains. Seventy-year-old Tong Shanhai sits in a dilapidated forest-guard hut, drinking cheap liquor with a chunk of pickled vegetable. A blizzard howls outside, while inside it's as cold as an ice cellar. He strokes a faded photograph of his wife, Pu Yuhui, when she was young, and tears stream down his face. Memories surge over him: his wife died young from years of exhaustion and sorrow; he drove away his six daughters, and hasn't heard from them since; his adopted nephew, Tong Dongdong, disappeared after stealing all his savings. He collapses drunk, and as his consciousness fades, he offers one last confession: “Yuhui... my girls... I failed you...”
