Hong Chengchou: Hidden DNA in the Qing Imperial Family?

Because of various factors, the official history of the Great Qing was never formally published. This gave unofficial histories of the dynasty, or “alternative history” theories (such as the claim that Hong Chengchou was Kangxi’s biological father), a chance to run rampant online. This is the so-called “Hong Studies.”

Behind the Forbidden City’s palace curtains lies a shocking secret, long relished in unofficial histories, that binds the fates of three pivotal figures: Hong Chengchou, a high-ranking minister of the former Ming, and the two Qing imperial consorts whose lives were entangled with his: Consort Zhuang, the consort of Hong Taiji and later the Empress Dowager Xiaozhuang, a pillar of the Shunzhi and Kangxi reigns; and Consort Tong, a concubine of the Shunzhi Emperor and the birth mother of the Kangxi Emperor.

In these accounts, every clue is fitted together like a puzzle, leading up to the eve of Kangxi’s birth.

In the end, all the fragmented rumors of political intrigue and romance between Hong Chengchou and Xiaozhuang, and his secret connection to Consort Tong, point to the same earth-shattering conclusion: the Kangxi Emperor, who ushered in the prosperous Kangxi-Qianlong era, may not have been the biological son of the Shunzhi Emperor, but of Hong Chengchou, once a pillar of the Ming and later a man whose extraordinary achievements helped secure the realm for the Qing. It is undoubtedly the strangest and boldest “change of bloodline” theory in the Qing dynasty’s three-hundred-year history.
