The Two Spy Beauties

On a snowy night in Suzhou in 1938, a Japanese sweep separated twin sisters Wen Zhiwei and Wen Zhixia. As their mother lay dying, she entrusted them to Old Wu, who ran a grocery store in the foreign concessions. Five years later, Shanghai's concessions are rife with undercurrents. The elder sister, Wen Zhiwei, goes undercover as a cool and refined art consultant. Her composed manner draws Matsumoto, head of the Japanese Special Higher Police, close, giving her a chance to steal intelligence about the “Cherry Blossom Blockade Plan.” The younger sister, Wen Zhixia, disguises herself as a dazzling opera singer and uses her lively charm to win Matsumoto's trust, but her impatience repeatedly puts her in danger.

Matsumoto is cunning and experienced. He sees through Wen Zhiwei's cover and leaves her mission in ruins. Meanwhile, the underestimated Wen Zhixia gradually grows with help from Qin Niang of the opera troupe and Zhao Zheng, a police officer in the concessions. Old Wu secretly leaves clues in the form of plum blossoms: earrings, a song, and a hairpin. At last, the sisters recognize each other in prison. In the end, they work together from within and without. With unexpected composure, Wen Zhixia switches Matsumoto's pen, which conceals the plan, and foils the conspiracy. In 1945, after victory in the War of Resistance, the sisters reunite at the Ting Song Tea House. The matching plum-blossom earrings in their hands gleam in the light of the city's jubilant lanterns.
