The Crown Prince’s faction gives her a hard time and lays traps for her; Regent Xiao Jue is a mystery; the bamboo slips left by her mother hold clues to an old Southern Yue case; and even the morning court session ends with the emperor personally appointing her to oversee the autumn sacrificial music and dance after spotting her “slacking-off doodles.” Shen Qianyin: “Thanks for asking, but I just want to slack off, not get involved in political intrigue.” But trouble keeps coming to her door.
