Journey to the West: Strange Tales of Rules and Taboos on the Road to the Western Heaven

Rules of the Strange Tales on the Journey to the West: The Precepts on the Road to the Western Heaven

The pilgrimage party sets out on its journey west. In their packs, alongside the scriptures, lies a sheet of precepts written in blood.

Guanyin’s smile conceals an abyss, Bajie’s hungry words are steeped in blood, Wukong’s fiery eyes may turn to ink, and the riverbed beneath Sha Seng is piled with white bones. Every step cuts along the blade of a rule: Sha Seng must not enter the water at the Flowing Sands River, both Wukongs must chant the tightening spell together, and they must take a detour around Backturn Mountain…

When the precepts become their only path to survival, the four master and disciples gradually realize that the so-called demons may be reflections of those who have broken the rules, and the so-called Western Heaven may be an even larger cage. They obey the rules to fight the uncanny, but with each act of obedience, they drift further from the “true scriptures” they first sought.

This is no epic of slaying demons and vanquishing evil. It is a chronicle of survival stitched together with precepts. When a Bodhisattva’s eyes become black holes and Wukong’s golden cudgel is stained with monkey blood, are they still on a pilgrimage for scriptures, or are they slowly becoming part of the rules themselves?
