Seven years ago, the young Marquis Gu Chen'an and Xie Changyuan, the Crown Prince's study companion, were the brightest stars in the capital.

They once shared a jug of wine and joked that they would clear the world of all obstacles for each other.

Seven years later, the entire Gu family has been falsely accused. Gu Chen'an guards the frontier, now a cold-faced general everyone fears, while Xie Changyuan has risen to become the all-powerful chief grand secretary, the corrupt official Gu hates most.

When Gu returns to the capital to report on his duties, the two face each other from afar beneath the imperial throne, their eyes filled with nothing but cold suspicion.

Gu Chen'an commands the army, while Xie Changyuan controls the court. Childhood friends have become mortal enemies.

Gu believes Xie Changyuan has long forgotten the vow they made beneath the peach blossoms. He doesn't know that, unseen by him, Xie Changyuan is using the world as a game board and himself as a piece, paving a perilous road home for Gu, one where survival is all but impossible.

“Chen'an, this world is filthy. I'll wade through it. Just remember, the spring breeze never crosses Yumen Pass, but I will cross it for you.”
