Spirit Medium Files: Unnatural Deaths

Beneath the black soil of Northeast China, the ancient pact of the spirit mediums conceals a mystery. Meanwhile, a string of unnatural deaths in modern cities and remote villages is tearing open the boundary between reality and the spirit world. Shen Zhiwei, a forensic examiner at a funeral home, inherited the spirit-medium tradition as a child. Her left eye can see the dead, and her right hand can sense yin energy. She had hoped to keep her heritage hidden and live as an ordinary forensic examiner, but while investigating her first “death by spontaneous combustion,” she discovered strange runes on the victim that did not belong to the world of the living. From locked-room murders in city skyscrapers to corpses in dry wells at old village houses, from the bizarre sudden death of a popular streamer to researchers dropping dead in their laboratory, every corpse tells of a truth someone tried to bury. Some use dark magic to sacrifice others and prolong their lives; some enlist spirits to exact revenge and claim lives; others are struck down by heavenly retribution for violating taboos. And behind it all, a family curse that has endured for over a century is at work. Chen Yan is forced to awaken the fox spirit power within him. Together with the hot-tempered police captain Lin Lan and the old Daoist priest Xuan Qing, who knows the arts of yin and yang, he forms a special investigation team to find answers between the forensic dissection table and the spirit-medium altar.
