The Forgotten River Pawnshop Records

On nights when the waters of the River of Forgetfulness spilled over the bluestone slabs, a lone lamp always shone in the pawnshop hidden at a fork in the road to the Underworld. The vermilion doors had long since worn away, yet the five gold characters above them, “Yellow Springs Pawnshop,” still gleamed with a cold light. Sandalwood incense drifted from behind the curtain, mingling with the faintest trace of ghostly aura. The customers who came here were never alive. One was a female ghost who had carried a lantern for three hundred years, hoping to redeem the memories that had been crushed to pieces. Another was a general willing to pawn seven lifetimes of reincarnation just to see his dead wife once more. And then there was a scholar clutching half a shattered soul, hoping to trade it for a moment of clarity. The shopkeeper always sat behind the counter, rubbing a yellowed contract between his fingers, and asked just one question: “What would you trade your soul for?” No one knew how long the shop had been open. People only said that whenever a deal was made, another figure appeared in the bronze mirror behind the counter, and the waters of the River of Forgetfulness grew a little murkier than they had been the night before. That was, until a boy with the aura of a living person stumbled in and discovered that the souls pawned as “collateral” had never truly left. They were simply trapped in their contracts, serving as the pawnshop’s eternal “nourishment.”
