Making Every Day as Happy as It Can Be

Managing a Household Frugally: Making Life the Happiest It Can Be for Every Penny

Introduction: Why Do We Need to Be Sensibly Frugal?

In this age of rampant consumerism, we often fall into one of two extremes: either we're swept up in the pursuit of appearances, earning 5,000 yuan a month but buying a 20,000-yuan handbag and relying on credit cards by month's end, or we equate frugality with depriving ourselves, eating food that's nearly expired and wearing worn-out clothes until life has no comfort left.

But true household thrift isn't a choice between being stingy and being wasteful. It's about planning sensibly so that every penny serves the quality of your life. Take Aunt Zhang, our neighbor. Her monthly pension isn't much, but she still makes her life colorful: she makes soy milk and buns for breakfast for less than 3 yuan; she turns old clothes into comfortable, eco-friendly loungewear; and by year's end, she can still save enough to take a short trip with her husband. She says, "It's not that you can't be happy when you don't have much money. You just need to know where to spend it and where not to."

This book wants to show you that managing a household frugally isn't a form of self-denial, but a kind of life wisdom. It can help you cut unnecessary expenses and build the confidence to face unexpected hardships. More than that, amid the everyday necessities of life, it can give you a sense of control over making the most of your days. Whether you're a young person just starting a family or a middle-aged couple juggling the needs of children and elderly parents, these practical methods can help you find a way to live frugally that suits you.
