Healing Through Emotional Decluttering and Starting Over

Prologue: Why Do We Need an Emotional Decluttering?

The emotional world of modern society is shrouded in a silent “overload crisis.” More than 300 “zombie contacts” on WeChat drain our social energy, while behind 17 consecutive years of rising divorce rates lie countless people struggling and wearing themselves down in their relationships. A Peking University social survey found that 68% of people born in the 1990s experience emotional overload, while Harvard research has confirmed that unhealthy relationships increase the risk of depression by 42%. Emotional excess and imbalance have long been a major burden on modern people’s mental health. From a psychological perspective, the need for emotional decluttering is firmly grounded. Cognitive load theory suggests that human emotional memory has a capacity of only “7 ± 2”; too many pointless relationships exceed the brain’s processing limits and cause decision fatigue in the prefrontal cortex. Neuroscience also shows that the amygdala overreacts to negative relationships, while only healthy relationships trigger the positive release of dopamine and maintain emotional balance. Redundant emotional connections are, in essence, a constant drain on psychological energy.

The core value of this book is to spark a shift in perspective from “hoarding relationships” to “choosing relationships with care,” helping modern people find ways of relating that fit their lives today within the traditional cultural context of “relationship-centeredness.” More importantly, it offers practical steps: build alliances based on shared values at work and leave behind the strain of pointless socializing; break patterns of emotional blackmail across generations at home and rebuild healthy boundaries. Emotional decluttering is not about rejecting relationships, but making room for precious connections so that every relationship can nourish and enrich your life!
