Inserted scene: The damp, musty stench mingled with the rancid odor of sewage, shrouding the murky light of the sewer. Furina curled up against the cold stone wall. Coarse ropes had rubbed red marks into her snow-white wrists and ankles, and every time she moved, the knots scraped against her skin. Her blue-and-white skirt had long since lost its former brightness. With withered yellow weeds caught in its hem and several dark mud stains on it, the exposed skin beneath looked all the paler. I slowly walked up to her and lightly nudged her curled-up knee with the tip of my shoe. Furina jerked her head up. Her golden eyes brimmed with wariness and defiance, but she was bound too tightly to rise. “Don't waste your energy.” I bent down, my voice wrapped in the sewer's chill as it rang clearly beside her ear. “From now on, you're under my control, Furina.”
