In the final years of the Nanzhao dynasty, the throne stands vacant as the princes turn on one another. The carefree Prince Lu Cizhao ascends the throne in a crisis. Though he has no ambitions for court politics, he struggles to keep the country afloat amid a ring of powerful ministers, vowing to protect its land and people. But chaos cannot be turned back, and enemy troops are at the borders.
At the Hall of Supreme Harmony, Lu Cizhao finally sees again the greatest pain of his life: Qin Yu, the Northern Di ruler and commander of the enemy forces. They had met and grown close while traveling, and Lu Cizhao had once trusted and depended on him as his dearest friend. “Lu Cizhao, be my empress. I’ll spare your ancestral temples and allow the Nanzhao royal family to continue their ancestral rites.” Faced with the humiliation of his country’s fall, Lu Cizhao would rather die for his kingdom than bow his head.
A secret Nanzhao technique turns his hair white overnight and lets him fake his death and escape. When he opens his eyes again, a thousand years have passed. Tomb raiders disturb his grave, and the outside world is filled with skyscrapers and neon lights. What leaves him even more breathless is the young man before him, Qin Yu, who looks exactly like Qin Yu.
A thousand years have not erased his hatred. Caught in a dislocation of time and space, how will the white-haired emperor face this reproduced face, and find a way to survive in an unfamiliar modern world?
The novel is different from most rebirth novels, the content is very original and unique. Lu Cizhao's despair a thousand years ago when he swore to protect the mountains and rivers but Nan Zhao destroyed the country, the anger of being betrayed by a close friend, the collapse and rebirth of belief in discovering the truth about the country's destruction a thousand years later; Qin Yu's thousands of years of building a beautiful palace just for that illusory hope, and his persistence a thousand years later are all touching people's hearts. Forgive my poor language, but the novel is worth reading.
