The Twelfth Meridian of New York

Lin Yan, a Chinese-American practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine, runs the Qing Nang Clinic in New York’s Chinatown. With a bronze medicinal grinder passed down from her grandfather and his yellowed medical records, she uses root-cause diagnosis and treatment to pierce the illusion of “treating symptoms, not causes,” striking at the commercial logic behind Western medicine’s “rapid relief” and the pharmaceutical giant Speedy Recovery’s monopoly. Her consultations are like a precise social CT scan, revealing the health struggles of people across New York society. She helps Uncle Chen, a laborer dependent on painkillers, overcome his joint pain; eases the pent-up frustration causing headaches in Layla, a girl bullied at school; clears the brain fog of professionals caught up in the demands of efficiency; and exposes the trap in Speedy Recovery’s “retirement package,” which ties in reverse mortgages to drain the wealth of the elderly. As Speedy Recovery closes in, first spreading rumors that traditional Chinese medicine is unlicensed, then pressuring insurers, Lin Yan uses the millennia-old wisdom in her grandfather’s medical records as a shield and clinical results as her sword, breaking through every obstacle step by step. When long COVID strikes, Lin Yan’s wisdom of “supporting the righteous and dispelling the evil” becomes a light at dawn. Her “Three Burners, Separate and Disperse” approach combines the strengths of Chinese and Western medicine, moving the two from conflict toward coexistence. Her former adversary, Speedy Recovery, changes course and lends its support, while recovered patients build a “Health Network Volunteer” community. As the meridians connect body and mind, and Eastern and Western civilizations, healing becomes the deepest kind of cultural dialogue.
