The Seasons of Herbal Medicine

Herbal Days uses an old apothecary as its lens, turning the everyday lives of Uncle Wei and Xiaoman into stories steeped in time, one medicinal herb at a time. From the gentle sweetness of Five-Red Soup to the pungent bite of the Four-Insect Formula, from the tenacious reach of Sinomenium vine to rhubarb’s fierce potency, each herb is linked to the hands of the older generation: Grandpa’s bamboo knife for gathering Sinomenium vine, Grandma’s enamel bowl for serving Five-Red Soup, and the hours Uncle Wei spends tending the stove as aconite simmers slowly. The forms of medicinal herbs conceal nature’s secret language: white peony root’s cut surface is like congealed cream, the dragon’s scales gleam blue-green, and agrimony’s downy hairs catch the morning dew. The care taken in processing them carries the warmth of tradition: nine rounds of steaming and drying remove the harshness from fleeceflower root, wine-fried Sinomenium vine gives the legs greater strength, and long simmering tames aconite’s potency. The wisdom of traditional Chinese medicine is found in the combinations: red and black complement each other, strength and gentleness work in harmony, insect-based remedies act like scouts, and vine-based remedies open channels like waterways. The stories show how herbs can treat every ailment, but also how they reflect the warmth of the human heart. The pain in Granny Zhang’s knees eases with Sinomenium vine, the Four-Insect Formula calms the Jiang boy’s epilepsy, and agrimony helps relieve Auntie Li’s hemorrhage. The scent of herbs drifts through the thunder of Awakening of Insects, the rain of Great Heat, and the snow of Winter Solstice, until it becomes a simple truth: plants have their nature, time leaves its traces. The older generation simmered their days into medicine, and medicine into their days.
