The Bookish Charm of a Wooden Cabin

In the turbulent twentieth century, a family supported by a veteran of the war to resist American aggression and a mother who was a folk healer weathered the tides of history like a small boat adrift in the waves.

The father was a hero who had returned from the Korean battlefield. He turned down land and honors in the county seat, choosing instead to take his 3,000 yuan compensation and return to the mountain village where he was born and raised, to protect a wooden house battered by wind and rain. The mother was the only “folk doctor” for miles around. With herbs and compassion, she kept her family healthy and provided for the needs of their household of eight.

It was a miracle: in an era when education was a luxury, all six of their children stayed in school. Their wooden house was small, but it always rang with the sound of children reciting their lessons. As the eldest daughter, the third child in the family, she took on the burdens of life at a young age, her slight shoulders carrying responsibilities beyond her years. She witnessed her father’s mountain-like silence and her mother’s water-like resilience, and guided her younger siblings as they used knowledge to change their fates, one step at a time.

From the hardships of the Cultural Revolution and the tide of reform and opening up to the dawn of the new millennium, this family’s joys and sorrows always echoed the pulse of the nation. This is not only the story of one family’s struggle, but also a portrait of an entire generation of Chinese people. No matter how the times changed, their thirst for knowledge and commitment to family values remained their sole guiding light, carrying them through every hardship and, at last, into brighter days.
