Central Plotline: The Fall from Immortal Venerable to Mortal, and Finding a Place in the World
Opening continuation (Chapter 1): The truth behind the “Shattering of the Ages” is revealed. Ling Yan's soul survived, wrapped in the remnant power of a jade pendant as it fell into the mortal world. Her immortal bones were shattered and her spiritual power sealed. Before her body could collapse, she possessed A Yan, an orphan girl in a small Jiangnan town who had just died of illness.
Awakening as a mortal (Chapters 2–4): A Yan wakes in a broken-down house and is overwhelmed by her mortal body, which has no immortal power, feels hunger, and is sensitive to the cold and heat. The jade pendant becomes a warm piece of jade she wears close to her body, retaining only the faint ability to “sense spiritual energy.” She happens upon Qing He, a flower seller who takes her in, and gets her first taste of everyday life in the human world.
Traces of old acquaintances (Chapters 5–8): At the market, A Yan senses a familiar trace of spiritual energy and follows it to Mo Chen, the young formation core of the protective mountain array from years ago. He too was caught up in the heavenly tribulation, and his cultivation fell to the Foundation Establishment stage. He has been living incognito in town as an apprentice at an herbalist's shop. The two reunite and learn that only a dozen or so of their 3,000 disciples survived, scattered throughout the mortal world.
Doubts about the heavenly tribulation (Chapters 9–12): Mo Chen reveals a crucial clue: the tribulation was far more powerful than what a “nine-thousand-year Immortal Venerable” should have faced, and the world-sealing talisman was damaged prematurely by an internal force. When A Yan touches the warm jade, she glimpses an image of her master saying before his death, “Beware the Zixu Palace.” She begins to suspect that the tribulation was not a matter of “heavenly law,” but something deliberately engineered.
A foundation for survival (Chapters 13–15): To support herself and search for clues, A Yan uses her faint ability to sense spiritual energy to help Qing He identify rare flowers and herbs, earning her first bit of money. She also discovers that although her mortal body is weak, it can sense things that cultivators overlook.
