She is an immortal who has lived for thousands of years.
From the Shang and Zhou dynasties, when the gods were enshrined, through the rise and fall of the Ming and Qing dynasties, she helped lords and nobles bring the land under their rule, and at other times hid among ordinary people, watching the world change. During the upheaval at the end of the Ming dynasty, she fell into a slumber that lasted three hundred years. When she awoke, it was the chaotic Republican era. She took in Zhou Qingyan, a destitute scholar, as her servant and protected his family’s prosperity for a century.
Before his death, Zhou Qingyan entrusted his granddaughter Zhou Xingran, who was born with Yin-Yang Eyes, to her. “Miss Hu Miao, protect her, and protect this human world.”
And so the immortal, who had lived too long and grown indifferent to worldly affairs, found herself accompanied by a lively, sharp-tongued modern girl. One uses ancient formations to send evil spirits on their way; the other looks things up on her phone and uses drones to track spirits. Together, mistress and servant investigate one bizarre case after another in a strange and dazzling city, gradually uncovering the shocking secret behind the event that put Hu Miao to sleep three hundred years ago. An immortal with the same origins as her covets her power of eternal youth and seeks to shatter the balance between the human and spirit realms.
As an ancient pact meets modern thinking and buried memories collide with the crisis at hand, Hu Miao looks at the noisy Chen Nian by her side and, for the first time, feels that this long and dreary immortality might offer a “here and now” worth protecting.
History is her footnote, the human world is her battlefield, and this time, she is not alone.
