The True Biography of Zhuangzi

Amid the turmoil of the Warring States era, Zhuang Zhou, a petty official, is tormented by the discovery that he can dream of becoming a butterfly, yet often loses himself in illusion and can no longer tell what is real (the foundation). When the power of his butterfly dreams spirals out of control and turns against him, and he suffers a crushing defeat in a debate with his close friend Hui Shi, he begins to glimpse the folly of striving (the turning point). The unbearable grief of losing his beloved wife pushes him to the brink of collapse, nearly trapping him forever in the cocoon of his own dreams (the abyss). At last, in the depths of his grief, he beats a tub and sings, and suddenly understands that true freedom does not lie in escape or control, but in letting things be, following the Dao, and releasing his attachment to self (awakening). From then on, he neither resists nor loses himself in dreams. His spirit becomes a great roc, roaming without dependence across the boundless expanse, and he achieves the timeless legend of the Perfect Man who has no self.
