The Mute Wife Who Wasn’t Mute

The morning mist in Qingxi Village always carried the sweet fragrance of pecans, but it couldn’t hide the strange looks the villagers gave Li Mei. This outsider had not spoken a word since arriving in the village. Even when she became the wife of Wang Qiang, who had a limp, she only clutched the hem of her clothes, her eyes filled with an impenetrable haze. Wang Qiang knew she was “mute,” but unlike the others who urged him to “keep her in line,” he simply handed her a warm corn cake first, mended her worn sleeve at night, and silently shielded her from the village gossip. It turned out his mute wife had never been mute. She had only been waiting for someone who would protect and believe her, someone who could give her a reason to speak again. The mountain winds of Qingxi Village scattered the rumors and brought two lonely souls together. Beneath the walnut trees, they planted crops and raised chicks, turning their days of hardship into the warmest scene in the mountains with quiet companionship and words that came too late.
