Pan Yue’s Talent Flourished Through Love in the Western Jin

Pan Yue (247–300), courtesy name Anren, was from Zhongmu County in Xingyang Commandery, present-day Zhongmu County, Zhengzhou, Henan. A renowned writer and politician of the Western Jin dynasty, he showed talent from a young age and was called a prodigy. After entering government service, he went through numerous changes of post. Pan Yue was implicated in the plot against Crown Prince Minhuai and was imprisoned and executed after Sima Lun of Zhao launched a coup.

Pan Yue’s poetry was ranked among the finest in Zhong Rong’s Critique of Poetry. He was paired with Lu Ji in the phrase “Pan’s River, Lu’s Sea,” praising their literary prowess. His Poems of Mourning pioneered the theme of mourning in Chinese literary history. He was also famed for his handsome looks, earning the title “the most handsome man in ancient China” and the compliment “as handsome as Pan An.”
