Reeds Swaying in the Wind: A Tale of the Western Zhou

Synopsis of Theatrical Boats

Theatrical boats are vessels used for theatrical performances, a distinctive form of floating stage. Their history can be traced back to the reign of Emperor Yang of Sui. His poem “Song of Music at Jiangdu Palace” includes the line “Long sleeves and clear songs delight the theatrical boats,” depicting the lavish scene of song and dance aboard dragon boats. By the Qianlong reign of the Qing dynasty, theatrical boats had reached their height.

At the time, salt merchants from the Lianghuai region designed a special stage to win Qianlong's favor. It was set atop two large boats. When the imperial barge drew near, fireworks burst and a giant peach split open, revealing a stage within where hundreds of performers presented The Longevity Mountain and Sea of Blessings. Theatrical boats were not exclusive to the royal family. From the mid-Ming onward, scholars in Jiangnan were fond of watching performances on boats, and Feng Mengzhen, Qi Biaojia, Zhang Dai, and others often recorded these experiences in their writings. Around Hangzhou and Jiaxing, folk theatrical boats toured year-round, with their troupes called “tower-boat companies.” Audiences watched from aboard the boats or from the shore. At Suzhou's Tiger Hill and Shantang, commercial theatrical boats known as “scrolling sterns” also appeared, with a stage at the bow and a dressing room in the cabin. This distinctive style of performance offered people of the time a unique form of entertainment and became a singular highlight in the development of Chinese opera.

Synopsis of the Western Zhou Dynasty

The Western Zhou Dynasty (approximately 1046–771 BCE) was an important dynasty in Chinese history, succeeding the Shang. It began when King Wu of Zhou, Ji Fa, overthrew the Shang and ended with the fall of the state under King You of Zhou. It lasted through twelve kings across eleven generations. The Zhou people originated in the Wei River valley. Their legendary ancestor, Hou Ji (Ji Qi), was said to have been born to Jiang Yuan, the principal wife of Emperor Ku. The Zhou people were skilled farmers and revered Hou Ji as the “Agricultural God.” His descendants later moved to Zhouyuan.
