Chunyu Yue: The Burning of Books in Xianyang

Chunyu Yue (dates of birth and death unknown) was a Confucian scholar from the state of Qi in the late Warring States period and a renowned court scholar of the Qin dynasty. Well versed in the Book of Documents, he revered the ancient institutions of the Three Dynasties and represented the Confucian tradition of Qi and Lu. After Qin Shi Huang unified the realm, Chunyu was selected as one of the seventy court scholars and appointed as libationer, overseeing scholarly and ceremonial affairs. At a banquet in the Xianyang Palace in 213 BCE, he openly opposed Chancellor Li Si’s implementation of the commandery system and urged the restoration of enfeoffment to protect the imperial house, declaring, “I have never heard of anything that ignores the ancients and yet endures.” His remonstrance directly prompted Li Si to propose the burning of books, leading to the destruction of the Odes, the Book of Documents, and the writings of the various schools, and ushering in the Qin dynasty’s cultural autocracy. The historical record says nothing definitive about his fate. He may have gone into hiding after the book burning, or perished during the execution of scholars. Yet his Confucian resolve to “uphold the Way of the Former Kings in opposition to current policy” became a symbol of intellectual resistance at the turn of the Qin and Han dynasties, and an important historical example for later generations reflecting on cultural policy.
