The Lingering Echoes of Xiang Xiu's Bamboo Grove

Xiang Xiu: The Lingering Echoes of the Bamboo Grove is a work of biographical literature set against the intellectual currents of Wei and Jin metaphysics. It focuses on Xiang Xiu (c. 227–272), the most philosophically profound of the “Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove.” Through its three-part structure of “forging iron, annotating Zhuangzi, and composing an elegy for the past,” the book shows how this thinker, caught between Ji Kang's heroic defiance and Guo Xiang's philosophical system, transformed the grief of losing a friend into philosophical creation. Beginning with a boy by the Yellow River annotating Zhuangzi, it follows his physical discipline at the forge beneath the willow trees, his spiritual rebirth as he witnesses an execution, and his wisdom in yielding to survive in Luoyang. It culminates in the oblique language of “Rhapsody on Remembering the Past” and the metaphysical breakthrough of his “Annotations to Zhuangzi,” offering an alternative legacy of the Bamboo Grove's spirit. The book reconstructs the development of Xiang Xiu's early theory of “the myriad things arising and transforming of themselves,” and his efforts to resolve the crises of his age through the principle of “following social norms while letting nature take its course,” revealing the originality obscured by Guo Xiang's commentary. Finally, through the symbolic ending of his soul returning to the Bamboo Grove, it portrays how scholars of the Wei and Jin dynasties protected the flame of the spirit through philosophy and literature under intense political pressure.
