The Tale of Zhang Hua, the Lamplighter

Zhang Hua: The Keeper of the Lamp is an epic biography centered on the idea that “knowledge safeguards civilization.” It offers a sweeping portrayal of the tumultuous life of Zhang Hua (232–300), a Western Jin luminary who rose from humble beginnings to become the empire's Minister of Works. The compilation of the Records of Natural Studies forms the narrative's backbone, while the Rebellion of the Eight Princes provides its historical framework. The story depicts how his vast learning earned him the recognition of Ruan Ji, how he helped Emperor Wu usher in the Taikang era of peace and prosperity, and how, amid political storms, the clear-eyed wisdom of his Rhapsody on the Wren helped him protect the embers of culture. Through five parts, “Stargazing from Humble Beginnings,” “Candle Shadows in Luoyang,” “The Broken Strings of Guangling,” “Warmth Among the Ashes,” and “Passing on the Spark,” the book reveals how this encyclopedic scholar broke through barriers to knowledge in an age dominated by powerful clans, and how his works survived the flames of war to influence Ge Hong, Guo Pu, and the civilization of the Tang and Song dynasties. In the end, the image of the “Keeper of the Lamp” elevates the story: though the grinding wheels of his age crushed one individual, the light of reason he kindled became a river of stars that illuminated a thousand years.
