I'm Just Working Part-Time, Okay!

Zhang Zhihe, also known as Zhang San, only wanted to be a carefree independent feng shui practitioner: help people adjust their homes, perform a ritual now and then, and earn just enough to get by. But who could have guessed that after he asked the Supreme Lord Lao three times to extend an old person’s life, the King of Hell would haul him straight in front of him? “You’ve meddled in matters of yin and yang beyond your authority. As punishment, you’ll work part-time as an underworld constable for a year and investigate cases of unnatural death!” From then on, Zhang San’s life was turned upside down. By day, he had to read feng shui for clients and break evil formations. By night, he had to investigate “murders that shouldn’t have happened” alongside the stiff old Zhou and the lively Xiao Lin. The culprit might be a “soul-snaring formation” set by a business rival, or a “life-force-draining trap” born of family feuds. Even the shady “life-stealing and lifespan-extending” schemes hidden inside wellness centers in the human world had to be exposed by his feng shui skills. What troubled him even more was the offer the King of Hell made when his part-time term was up: “Stay on as a full-time employee, and earn 1,000 Underworld Merit Points per case. Save up 100,000 points, and you can become a judge of the dead when your life ends. Your father’s a temporary clerk in the underworld? Turning him into a permanent employee would take just one word from me.” On one side was the freedom of an independent practitioner; on the other were his responsibilities in the underworld, his family’s security, and all the people waiting for him to solve their crises and save their lives… In the end, Zhang San chose to stay. More unexpectedly, the Supreme Lord Lao descended to the mortal world in person, bestowed on him the sect Qing Sect, and gave him permission to open its doors and take disciples. The King of Hell also voiced his support, hoping Zhang San would train the next generation of underworld constables. Three disciples with very different personalities, Lin Xiaoman, Zhao Lei, and Xiao An, joined the sect as his pupils… From personal cultivation to passing on a sect’s legacy, and from feng shui in the human world to order in the underworld, Zhang San proved in his own way that feng shui can save lives without harming others, and that both the worlds of yin and yang need people to uphold what is right.
