Wang Meng Shocks the World

Wang Meng, a modern transmigrator, borrows the name of the Langya Wang clan and serves as acting governor of Nan Commandery. At the time, he has little influence, his false identity is on the verge of being exposed, the local aristocratic clans harbor resistance, and the court watches him like a hawk. To break out of his predicament, Wang Meng stuns the realm with a declaration of war and establishes the Jixia Academy, inviting scholars from far and wide. With “practical statecraft” at its core, he uses modern knowledge to outclass his opponents in debate and expose the emptiness of lofty talk about the classics. He ventures into the fields and workshops, improving irrigation, upgrading looms, and developing ironmaking, turning book learning into tangible improvements to people’s lives.

When the aristocratic clans conceal farmland and resist change, Wang Meng takes decisive measures to investigate and reform them, turning Nan Commandery into a unified stronghold. His talents earn the emperor’s favor: not only is the word “acting” removed from his title and he is appointed governor in his own right, but he is also invited to serve as a visiting scholar at the Imperial Academy. He then heads north to Jiankang with innovative tools such as the “horse-powered waterwheel,” intent on bringing the new learning to the heart of the Wu dynasty. Using a strategy that combines the ways of kings and hegemons, he stirs up the political landscape and vows to make the name “Wang Meng” famous beyond Nan Commandery, turning it into a legend that transcends the ages.
