Chang’an Medical Shadows: A Heartbeat in the Glorious Tang Dynasty

Outside Chang’an in the twenty-third year of the Kaiyuan era, among the cold grass of a ruined temple, Lin Wei, a third-year modern clinical medicine student, jolted awake in a bone-chilling wind. The moment her fingertips touched a copper medicine pot from the Tang dynasty, she transmigrated from the medical school’s archive of ancient texts to the height of the Tang dynasty. She had nothing to her name but a first-aid kit hidden at her waist and a head full of modern medical knowledge. Faced with a damp, musty temple, a coarse-cloth ruqun washed nearly white, and the plight of a child abandoned at a charity cemetery, she was filled with fear and helplessness in this strange new world.

By a twist of fate, she met Chuntao, an orphaned girl seeking a doctor for her younger brother. She discovered that six-year-old Xiaobao was suffering from acute pneumonia and dehydration, while the local physician had simply declared him possessed. Lin Wei suppressed her shock at having transmigrated, used fever reducers from her first-aid kit to control his temperature, listened to his lungs with a stethoscope, then went up the mountain to gather herbs such as dandelion and honeysuckle. Combining modern medical thinking with traditional methods, she actually saved Xiaobao, who had been at death’s door.

Her medical skills began to shine, but they also drew suspicion and hostility from the neighborhood’s older physicians, and made her see the backward state of folk medicine beneath the Tang dynasty’s splendor. People were too poor to seek treatment, minor illnesses became severe, and folk remedies cost lives. From struggling to survive in the ruined temple to temporarily borrowing a small courtyard, from treating Xiaobao to helping her neighbors with diarrhea, Lin Wei gradually shed her initial fear and made a place for herself in this unfamiliar land, guided by a healer’s compassion. She must not only use modern medical knowledge to solve one medical puzzle after another, but also find a path to practice medicine for herself and for the many suffering people, despite the restrictions against treating patients without a medical license. In the morning light of Chang’an, the story of her healing herbs has only just begun.
