The Fragrance of a Thousand Gold: After the Powerful Official Locks Her Away in His Mansion

Set during the Xianfeng era of the Qing dynasty, this historical romance centers on Yang Dinglai, a talented scholar from Shanyang in Huai’an Prefecture, Huainan. Born into a family with five generations of successful candidates in the imperial examinations, he earns third place in the palace examination at a young age. By chance, he meets the daughter of an imperial physician, Miss Zha, and the two discover their shared interests and quietly fall in love.

However, Miss Zha is forced into marriage by the powerful official Pan Qing, while Yang Dinglai is framed by Pan Qing and accused of stealing the personal belongings of an official’s family.

With “resigning from office” as its central theme, the novel vividly depicts Yang Dinglai’s difficult choice between his family’s illustrious reputation, success in the imperial examinations, and a love that cuts to the bone. To protect his true love, he dares to defy the powerful, even willingly ending his family’s glorious tradition of producing successful examination candidates for five generations.

Blending historical fact with artistic invention, the work portrays both the dark infighting of the examination system and officialdom, and a deeply moving romance. Through highly symbolic scenes such as “tearing off an official robe” and “bringing down a golden plaque,” it celebrates the courage to resist the oppression of Confucian rites and pursue freedom and genuine love. This is an accomplished episodic novel, rich in dramatic tension and human compassion.
