Edge of the Shadows: My Thrilling Life as a Spy

In 1938, Shanghai has fallen, and undercurrents churn beneath the surface. Ling Feng, a street kid who grew up fighting his way through the alleys, is recruited by the Military Statistics Bureau purely because of his exceptional fighting skills. From then on, he walks the knife’s edge as a spy.

Starting with running errands, delivering messages, and tailing people to buy cigarettes, he relies on streetwise cunning and a reckless streak to turn the tables time and again when all seems lost. He makes fools of the agents at 76, robs enemies of their spoils, and matches wits with the elite of Japan’s Plum Agency. He also finds himself entangled in turbulent romances with a cool, beautiful communications chief, the Paramount’s top hostess, and an angel in white from the underground party.

“Codename Phantom? Sounds pretty intimidating.” Ling Feng toys with the captured Colt pistol, a roguish smile tugging at his lips. “But I’m more used to a brick. It hits harder, and saves bullets.”

As the truth is revealed layer by layer and trust gives way to betrayal, he rises from a pawn to the one moving the pieces, staging a breathless covert war on this isolated island.

“Remember, anyone who leaks secrets ends up at the bottom of the Huangpu River.” “Don’t worry, Chief.” Ling Feng flips the newly issued silver dollar, his eyes sharp as a blade. “I’m a man of my word: I take the money and do the job. Even if I’m going to flip the table, I’ll wait until I’ve finished eating.”

This is a legend of an underdog’s rise, a thrilling spy thriller packed with one satisfying moment after another. See how Ling Feng climbs up from the bottom, shakes up Shanghai, becomes the king of the night, and ultimately retires after accomplishing his mission.
