The Biography of Dong Zhongshu, Sage of Heaven and Man

Dong Zhongshu (179–104 BCE), a native of Guangchuan Commandery in the Western Han dynasty, in present-day Jing County, Hebei, was a master of the Gongyang school of Confucianism and a leading intellectual during the reign of Emperor Wu of Han. As a boy, he studied the Spring and Autumn Annals and was so devoted to his work that he did not look at his garden for three years. He became an expert on the relationship between Heaven and humanity. In 140 BCE, the first year of the Jianyuan era, he answered Emperor Wu’s questions with the “Three Strategies on Heaven and Humanity,” proposing that the “Hundred Schools be dismissed and Confucianism alone be honored.” This laid the foundations for Confucianism’s status as the orthodox tradition for more than two thousand years. His thought centered on Confucianism while incorporating ideas from yin-yang theory, the Five Phases, Legalism, and other schools. He developed the theory of “Heaven-human resonance,” arguing both that “the ruler’s authority is bestowed by Heaven” and that “Heaven sends calamities and anomalies” to restrain imperial power. His works, including Luxuriant Dew of the Spring and Autumn Annals, systematically expounded such theories as “great unity” and the “Three Bonds and Five Constant Virtues”: the ruler guides the subject, the father guides the son, the husband guides the wife; benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom, and trustworthiness. These principles made Confucian ethics the core norms of feudal society. He served as Chancellor of Jiangdu and Chancellor of Jiaoxi, retiring in his later years to write. His thought profoundly shaped the political institutions and cultural landscape of the Han dynasty, transforming Confucianism from a popular school of thought into the official ideology. He was a pivotal figure in the history of Chinese thought, carrying the past forward into the future.
