Pines and Snow, a Long River: The Biography of Zhao Mengfu

Zhao Mengfu (1254–1322), courtesy name Ziang and art name Songxue Daoren, was from Wuxing, Zhejiang. An eleventh-generation descendant of Emperor Taizu of Song, Zhao Mengfu served the Yuan dynasty as a member of the Song imperial clan, eventually becoming Academician-in-Waiting at the Hanlin Academy. He was posthumously given the title Wenmin. His artistic achievements were unparalleled. In painting, he pioneered a new style of literati painting in the Yuan dynasty and proposed the theory that “calligraphy and painting share the same source.” His celebrated Autumn Colors on the Que and Hua Mountains blends the techniques of the Northern and Southern schools. In calligraphy, he founded the “Zhao style” and was named one of the Four Great Masters of Regular Script alongside Ouyang Xun, Yan Zhenqing, and Liu Gongquan. Works such as the Stele of Danba and Ode to the Goddess of the Luo River showcase his vigorous, graceful, and refined style. His poetry and prose were elegant, and he compiled the Collected Works of the Songxue Studio. Spanning the Song and Yuan dynasties, he used art to bridge cultures amid political tensions. Hailed as “the foremost artist of the Yuan,” his theories and practice profoundly influenced six centuries of Chinese painting and calligraphy, making him a pivotal figure who carried the tradition forward while shaping what came next.
